After apparently complete oöphorectomy (= ovariectomy, surgical removal of an ovary), fragments of ovarian tissue may, for a variety of reasons1a, remain and even enlarge. Such persistence is not de facto evidence of substandard surgical technique.
Whether ovarian remnant syndrome is a cause of chronic pelvic pain1 is controversial. Rarely, the remaining ovarian tissue can set up such inflammation that the ureter is blocked2.
