"Oral agents should be discontinued when the patient is admitted to the intensive care unit, as these drugs are not useful for inpatient glycemic management and expose the patient to the risks of drug interactions and drug-specific side effects (Table 1). Consequently, most patients with hyperglycemia should be treated with insulin during hospitalization and then restarted on their oral medications during the transition to the outpatient setting."
